Melanie is a country girl who considers herself an emerging artist whose work explores ideas of femininity and identity. She works with a range of materials and mediums, including printmaking, drawing, painting, collage, and polaroid photography. She draws inspiration from feminist artists such as Hannah Wilke, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Hanrahan, Maria Lassnig and Frida Kahlo. She also experiments with surrealist ideas and techniques to create social commentary exploring femininity in modern society. Melanie also loves retro futurism, and is looking to explore this more in her future work!
I make art for women which comments on todays society and sexist tropes which we still see used. I believe that by taking sexist tropes and subverting them, women can reclaim words and ideas that might otherwise be considered old fashioned. A little sarcasm and sexiness in my prints really brightens up my day!
