The City Series: A Solo Show by James McLean
July 2 @ 10:30 am - November 30 @ 6:00 pm
Join us for The City Series; a solo show by Melbourne artist James McLean.
“Underlying in the chaos, I call on my sense of community, and the power it should provide to protect its most vulnerable in uncertain times.”
‘The City Series’ depicts characters and people living in the same colourful, but brutal and uncompromising city from the powerful and influential right down to the desperate and vulnerable. These characters try and get by the daily grind of everyday life in a world that although colourful and pretty to look at can also has a hidden dark side beneath the surface. Using extracted shapes and vibrant colours artist James McLean creates characters that are a little out of this world but at the same time are relatable for audiences in their everyday routines. The lasting message the series is trying to tell is that as a community we need to have empathy for one another in uncertain and difficult times.
James McLean is a Melbourne based artist who uses a mixture of markers and inks to express his passion for observing people and making social and political commentary. James strives to address topical social issues such as war, political corruption, asylum seekers, mental illness, poverty and the mistreatment of others. His unique characters and vast landscapes of faces, draws inspiration from the people he sees everyday. Using strong bold lines, James gives weight to the abstract faces, focusing on the unique and individual expressions and emotions they have. The addition of selective colour further adds to highlight the tension and mood.
Exhibition Runs: 2 July- 31 August 2020
