Artist Statement

Soft, organic, disturbing, and provocative, my photographs emanate a painterly quality and abstraction which is achieved through experimental in-camera techniques. These processes are used to blur lines between the female body, her environment, and the preconceived notions of her sexuality. Within contemporary Western societies women are heavily sexually-objectified while their sexual-autonomy is repressed by patriarchal social constructs. In opposition to this I visualize the multiplicity of the female – sexual, non-sexual, dominant, submissive, wild, tame, vulnerable, strong, lost and found. The performance within my practice allowing myself and the women I am shooting to explore our own multiplicity – in the act of reclaiming our bodies, to explore the vast spectrum of what is our sexuality.”

Nicole Barros

After refining her skills both painting and drawing for 29 years, Nicole has found her true flair and passion in watercolours, graphite and coloured pencils. She likes to work on an array of different subjects although she has a great passion for animals in particular. Her style is realism, although she is not sure yet whether that is a personal interest or due to the large volume of commission work she does with most requests asking for an artwork which is picture/photo perfect.

Nicole has had some wonderful teachers and the opportunity to work in some amazing studios over the years. Originally from NSW, she began her formal training at Julian Ashton Art School Sydney and her paintings are housed all over the world in various businesses and private collections. Over the years she has sold many paintings and has won awards. Nicole is currently teaching graphite drawing, coloured pencils and watercolour painting for all levels.
