Let’s Get Together

Let’s Get Together

in.cube8r gallery presents: Let’s Get Together

Let’s Get Together is an opportunity for artistic collaboration. A conversation between two artists, an ongoing interaction, a chain reaction. It is a study and a development as much as a show, a chance to influence, to alter, to diverge. Sometimes a question, sometimes an answer, always an exploration. Join us as we showcase the new kind of power duo.

Exhibition Runs: 8 August 2019 – 21 August 2019
Opening Event: Thursday 8 August 2019, 6pm

Featuring collaborations from

Genevieve Pikó & Katie Paine

Genevieve Pikó is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist working predominantly in video installation, using appropriated footage to explore ideas of gender, memory, time and trauma. Pikó takes a painterly attitude to the digital, embracing the ‘glitch’. Viewing television and film as a repository of collective memory, screening and looping is used to subvert narrative expectations, to symbolically represent mental fragmentation and decay. Pikó completed her Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at RMIT in 2015 for which she received the Vice-Chancellor List Award. She has shown works in galleries such as Blindside ARI, Kings ARI and c3 Contemporary Art Space.

Katie Paine is a Naarm/ Melbourne-based artist and writer whose practice investigates systems of meaning-making, specifically the role images and language play in constructing narrative. She investigates the acts of speaking, reading and writing; these tools are often used to successfully communicate knowledge but in her work she explores the ways that they can be fallible, porous and mutable. Within her work Paine uses text, drawing, video, assemblage and installation to explore our collective conceptualisation of time and the way systems of meaning-making are culpable for perpetuating fraught narratives, particularly in relation to our understanding of history.  In her research Paine looks at the fallacies of bureaucratic institutions; the way in which they are hostile to living bodies and also the limits of the archive’s capacity to communicate lived experience of an event. Paine has exhibited at c3 Contemporary Art Space, Channels Festival, Blindside ARI and George Paton Gallery. Her work will be included in an upcoming exhibition at La Trobe Art Institute. Using writing as a mode of artistic practice alongside criticism, Paine has written for institutions such as Next Wave, Bus Projects, Nicholas Projects, Un Projects, Art Almanac and Art and Australia

Caitlin Chilton & Melissa Selby

We used this collaboration as an opportunity to focus on our shared love of animals and their diversity by exploring the many different shapes and colours in the animal kingdom. Our theme demonstrates the different shapes and colours of the beautiful animal kingdom, a topic close to both our hearts.

Caitlin is an emerging Melbourne based illustrator who is very much in love with painting animals and plants. Her work is an exploration of animal rights and environmentalism, interspersed with cute creatures and objects. She works in soft colours through the use of watercolour and ink.

Savi Ross & Jaz McGaughey

‘On My Mind’ is a collection of thoughts, worries, and revelations written by Jaz McGaughey and illustrated by Savi Ross. Jaz and Savi have come together to explore their shared anxieties around navigating technology, becoming ‘adults’ and living through the unpredictability of Australian weather. Collaborating together gave both artists – siblings originally from Queensland but now living in different states – an opportunity to create something special together and laugh over similar life experiences.

Savi Ross is an African American, Torres Strait Islander artist based in Melbourne/Narrm. Her work celebrates women of colour, body positivity, and being queer, while exploring the complexity and beauty of identity. Most of her work is digital, but she also works with wood, clay, and acrylics.

Jasmin is a Torres Strait Islander from the Kulkalgal Nation and African American. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Justice in 2016, but quickly realised her love was writing. She recently finished her Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing through the University of Queensland. Currently, she works at black&write! as an Editor Intern at the State Library of Queensland. Jasmin’s passions have always been writing and reading and she is proud to be able to work and learn in this field with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing.

Kelly Zarb & Leonne Barker

Being a part of the “Let’s get together,” exhibition is a perfect opportunity to show what collaboration can truly offer everyone. It’s a lovely chance to work alongside my dear friend and fellow artist Leonne Barker. To share time, space and connection to bring together different life experiences and painting styles in a purposeful way of working in sisterhood. We will work with no preconceived plans or ideas of what will unfold, just a great opportunity to connect, play and see what magic happens, so stay tuned for much more to come.

Collaboration gives us an opportunity to let go of ownership in expression and bring through something based on a foundation of connection and relationship. The quality of our relationship with each other and all others are made manifest.

Kelly Zarb is a self-taught painter who resides in Carrum, Victoria. She loves the everyday inspirations found via her daily connections to people, plants and the world around her.

Art for Leonne is an immediate symbolic communication that emanates long after the brush has left the canvas.  She creates with a knowing that expression comes through her, not from her and not for her, but for all. This is a responsibility she takes seriously and it reminds her to keep it light and playful.
