Meet The Artist: Oh Jessica Jessica

Meet the Artist: Oh Jessica Jessica

We had a chat with Jessica from “Oh Jessica Jessica” a label making super cute enamel pins in what seems like a neverending number of different styles!

Hi Jessica! Can you start by letting us know a little about what you do?

I am an animator and illustrator who designs quirky enamel pins of animals and things that take my fancy. I also create comic-book styled illustrations of quiet, contemplative moments with bold, vibrant colours! I spend most of my time either at my day-job (animating), or at home drawing, writing, and thinking of new pin ideas! I. Don’t. Stop. Working.

I studied Fine Arts after high school as there weren’t many animation courses in Western Australia. 6 years ago I moved to Melbourne to study animation full-time and couldn’t be happier I made the trip over! Since finishing my Masters in Film and Television I have worked a day job and built my label Oh Jessica Jessica, focusing on producing pins and accessories in the last 2 years.

What inspires your designs?

Animation! Cartoons are a big part of my everyday. At the moment I am obsessed with Steven Universe and Adventure Time, but I also love watching Japanese cartoons. My favourites series are Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Berserk, and Fullmetal Alchemist!

I am also inspired by the stories I create in my head, and the stories told by others. Berserk, Saga, and Snot Girl are some of my favourite comics to read. I also draw inspiration from music. I love musicians like Nick Cave, Tom Waits, The Protomen, Muse, and PJ Harvey, but also listen to some hard core pop on occasion. I have a playlist on my iPod that I work to. It’s very eclectic.

Any other hobbies?

I like cycling and commute to work on my bike. When I get free time I like to cycle down to St Kilda with my partner and ride along the beach. I also play video games on occasion (JRPGS like Final Fantasy and Ni No Kuni + retro plat-formers) plus I LOVE to crochet! I actually made a stop-motion animation for my grad film called Crochet Noir. It’s crocheted puppets in a film noir setting.

What did you want to be as a child?

I wanted to be a ballerina! But I couldn’t turn the right way (I’m left handed and some movements are just bizarre to me) At the end of primary school my focus shifted to the visual arts.

What was it about in.cube8r which appealed to you?

I chose in.cube8r because of the genuine and artistic vibe. I think it’s such a wonderful idea to bring all these artists together in the one space and give them an opportunity for exposure in a retail environment. As a Melbourne-based creator it’s great to have product in a physical location, and Fitzroy is a really good area with lots of awesome stuff happening! I hope to share my creations with as many people as possible.

What’s next for you?

It’s heading into convention season, so I’m busy trying to get new pin designs finalised, as well as new fanart and original illustrations! I hope to branch out into pendants and earrings this year, and have created a small pile of thumbnails on scraps of paper.

Jessica can be found on Etsy as well as Instagram, Facebook,  Twitter and her website www.ohjessicajessica.com as well as at various conventions and markets throughout the year! You can also find some of her designs in our online store RIGHT NOW! So go get em!
