The Primary Series / RED

The Primary Series: RED is the first in an ongoing series exploring colour as influence, muse and master. It is an opportunity for artists to delve deep into their relationship with red. The most extreme of colours – symbol of love and of anger, both flushing in our cheeks. Bold and bloody, a welcome and a warning, this is the colour that really gets us fired up. Join us as artists find new ways of mixing the most basic pigments.

Works

Cathy Speed

Cathy Speed is a freelance designer and artist from Melbourne by way of rural Queensland. Her art is all about the tactility of embroidered works with a focus on feminist and human rights themes. If not designing, working or sewing you’ll find her either sweating up a storm at a Les Mills class or watching a melodramatic sci-fi TV series.⠀⠀

Shellie Tonkin

Shellie Tonkin is an artist based in Melbourne who is best known for her earlier work documenting bands. Her current artwork is more concerned with what she thinks and feels as oppose to what she sees.

I have a long relationship with the colour red. Red is the colour of passion, love, rage, joy and sentience and as my work explores the hidden intimacies of everyday life I find it endlessly versatile.

Laura Messenger

Laura is an illustrator with a background in graphic design and visual arts and has been creating since she could hold a crayon. As her skills grew, so did her fascination with portraits, character design and the supernatural. In 2018 she decided to create Luna’s Illustrations, a specialty art brand that meshes body positivity with her own personal brand of folklore. Luna’s Illustrations was so named to reflect the ethereal, mystical and inherently female nature of her work. It is an exploratory practice that is constantly evolving in it’s themes and concepts but is always visually unique. Luna’s Illustrations sells a range of products including stickers, prints and bags on Society 6. Commissions are also available via email.

Red courses through our veins. Our life source. It connects us to the constantly shifting universe around us with its perseverance as well as its fragility. Falling apart and re-building over and over again. Red makes us human. It is our passion and power, driving us forward while also connecting us to the quiet fire of the here and now. Red is our mothers, nurturing with fire and blood. We are red. Inside and out. Red is human, deeply and irrevocably.

Sarah Mischker

Sarah grew up in the US in a small state called Arkansas; where trees grow freely and small towns shrink as the years go by. She’s been painting and drawing as far back as she can remember, but feels that she’s still new to the language of art and has much to learn. Sarah is passionate about art history and hopes to someday open up a little shop and studio where she can teach the importance of art in society and it’s colossal impact on human history. Most of her inspirations come from things she’s read, experienced, or finds interesting such as nature and human anatomy. Sarah finds the intricacies and beauty of organic lifeforms to be very inspirational, especially when an undertone of poetic human emotion is added!

Passion, anger, violence, rage, love, these are just a few of the emotional connotations the colour red has been given throughout all of time. Red is a colour of power and war as well as love and desire. It expresses our most fierce emotions in psychological and metaphorical ways. And yet the colour red has always left me feeling ashamed and singled out. Red blossoms across my face and body whenever I feel embarrassed, shy, or judged. Red bursts out and colours my skin for no reason at all. Red draws people’s attention to it. I always tried to cover this beautiful colour up with makeup or clothing when I should have been embracing myself for who I am and what I look like. Red deserves to be embraced, as does everyone.

Rather than power, courage, and passion, red has always been a colour of shame, embarrassment, and disappointment for me. I would wear layers of makeup to cover up the natural redness of my cheeks or spend money on sunless tanning so that I wasn’t so pale and rosy. As I got older, I realised I should change my attitude towards my skin rather than change my skin. Everyone looks different and there are many different beautiful appearances. Embrace your quirks, embrace your flaws, embrace your perceived blights; there’s more to beauty than what the eye sees.

Gemma Mitting

Aberdeen street prints uses spray paint and stencils to reveal something new about vintage photographs. Colour is an important part of my practice and red has always been one of my favourite colours. It provides a stark contrast between old and new.

Red is one of my favourite colours to use, it signifies so many different emotions. For me, it is such a statement colour and tends to really stand out in my paintings.
